What you can expect from Tarifa

Tarifa, located in the southernmost part of Spain, is known for its winds and its big kite scene. It’s where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean Sea and where you can see Africa while drinking your morning coffee. This little town comes with almost only white houses, small pathways and great beaches right at its doorstep.

You can expect a calm life close to nature while still making great connections with the locals. Within a few hours you can visit Africa by boat or make a trip to Seville or Malaga.

When it comes to work, there are a few co-livings in town, as well as co-working spaces.

Location & Culture: Tarifa As Your Digital Nomad Home

Tarifa is located in southern Spain, in the region of Andalusia, roughly a three-hour drive from Málaga and four hours from Seville. What makes Tarifa's location so special is that it is the southernmost point of mainland Europe, sitting just across from Africa at roughly 15 km as the crow flies.

Tarifa is famous for its great kiting conditions, good food and beautiful beaches. The people there are very friendly and you can easily strike up a good conversation, though a little Spanish goes a long way.

Just outside of town there is a lovely short hike where you can see Africa on the horizon, encounter some roaming cows and catch stunning sunrises. It is also quite easy to make a weekend trip to Africa, Seville or Málaga.

Tarifa is small, but it has everything you might need. A gym, good restaurants and cafés, great nature and a strong sense of community.

Activities | Digital Nomads Tarifa

As you can probably imagine, most activities in Tarifa revolve around nature. Whether it is kiting or surfing there is plenty to keep you busy. And even if you are not a kiter yourself, you might just want to sit at the beach and watch them do their thing. Beyond that, there is much more to explore:

Coworking in Tarifa

The digital nomad scene in Tarifa is relatively small, but given the size of the town it is actually more than you would expect. This is largely thanks to the colivings, which bring people and fellow nomads together in a natural way.

Most colivings come with a workspace included, but there are also dedicated co-working spaces a 15 to 20 minute walk from the center. Internet is up to European standards across the board, so reliable wifi is easy to find wherever you end up working from.

Here are some coworking options that our digital nomad community has tested in Tarifa:

NOMADICO COLIVING TARIFA

Our Nomadico home in Tarifa welcomes you right in the heart of this charming little town. Every room comes with a desk for private calls and deep focus, and there are plenty of cozy corners around the house for when you need a change of scenery. The rooftop is also a great spot to get some work done with a view.

If you need more focus, just take a five-minute walk through Tarifa's winding center to our dedicated co-working space in our second home.

TAF COWORKING

TAF is a spacious coworking space with a mix of office chairs and cozy wooden furniture, about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the center along the beach. You can book a day pass or just drop in for half a day. The space includes a kitchen, free coffee and water, and private office rooms for an extra charge. For calls, there is a phone booth and other quiet spots available.

CAFE AZUL

Cafe Azul is a cozy, stylish spot right in the heart of Tarifa, perfect for starting your day with a great coffee and a tasty breakfast. The vibe here is super friendly and relaxed, making it easy to settle in and get some work done. You’ll find a mix of locals and travelers, so it’s a nice place to meet other nomads or just enjoy the buzz while you work. They’re totally cool with laptops, and the WiFi is solid for catching up on emails or getting through a quick work session.

Just a heads up - if it gets busy, it’s good etiquette to wrap up and free up your seat for others. It’s not really the place for long calls or deep work, but if you’re looking for a chill spot to be productive for an hour or two, Cafe Azul is a solid choice.

The Climate & Best Time For You To Stay In Tarifa

Due to the European summer, the warmest months in Tarifa run from May to October. However, this is also peak holiday season, and the town can get quite packed. Kiters flock here in big numbers and the whole place turns into a vibrant little surf hub.

Why go in low or shoulder season?

If you want to experience the best of this southernmost edge of Europe, the shoulder seasons are the sweet spot. Think October to December or March to May. The weather will not always be perfect and some rainy days are to be expected, but our community still enjoyed plenty of sunny and warm days with time to relax at the beach and on the rooftop.

Although if you'd like to start your year with the best intention, visiting Nomadico in January or February might be what you need. They put extra focus on wellness, with weeks packed with yoga, meditation and healthy routines.

If yoga sessions, meditation, healthy routines, and a slower pace sound like your ideal way to start the year, January and February might be the perfect time to experience Tarifa. Nomadico puts extra effort in these months to include welness activities.

Digital Nomad Communities In Tarifa

The digital nomad community in Tarifa is small, but you will occasionally come across fellow nomads and expats around town. Keep in mind that Tarifa is a very local place at its core, and the crowd changes quite a bit depending on the season.

In summer, the town fills up with holidaymakers and the atmosphere shifts, while in the shoulder seasons it feels much more authentic and community-driven.

There are no dedicated nomad meet-ups or organized communities like you might find in bigger cities, so the best place to connect with like-minded people are the colivings.

You could also join the nightlife or drop into one of the local jam sessions, but if you want to make sure you are meeting people who are also working remotely, colivings and coworking spaces are your best bet.

Cost of living Tarifa

One advantage of Tarifa being a smaller town is that prices are well below those of bigger cities. Of course it depends on where you go, as local spots will always be cheaper than the more touristy places, but that is pretty much the case anywhere you go.

Where to stay as a digital nomad in Tarifa

Due to the size of the town, everything is very walkable. The best area to stay is probably the old town near the market. From there you have cute little cafés right on your doorstep, the beach is a five-minute walk away, you can start a beautiful hike into nature in just five minutes and the bigger supermarkets are reachable in about seven minutes.

A day in the life of a digital nomad in Tarifa

Life in Tarifa can feel like stepping into a fairytale, or simply a place where life is still as it should be. The vibe in this town is truly special. Beautiful white houses, the beach just around the corner and Africa visible right across the water.

During the week

Depending on your timezone, you can start the day with a yoga session or a workout on the rooftop with views across to Africa, or head out for an early morning run along the beach before stopping at the local market for breakfast.

After work, you can take a dip in the ocean (depending on the time of year it might feel more like an ice bath), catch a great sunset at the beach or explore the local tapas scene.

On the weekend

In Tarifa itself there is a beautiful hike just outside the center, where you can catch a stunning sunrise, share the trail with some roaming cows and watch massive cargo ships passing through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Speaking of which, Gibraltar is great for a perfect day trip. This little British territory sitting right on the tip of Spain is unlike anywhere else in Europe and easy to reach in about an hour. And as a little fun fact: Gibraltar is home to a colony of wild Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys living in Europe.

For a taste of city life, a weekend trip to Seville or Málaga is a great way to mix things up and balance it with the more relaxed pace of Tarifa. And if you are into watersports, the conditions here are world class. Whether you want to try kiting for the first time or are already an experienced surfer, Tarifa has some of the best schools and rental spots in Europe.

How To Get To Tarifa & Where To Go Next

When visiting Tarifa, it makes sense to combine it with a trip to Málaga or Seville, as those are the two closest airports. From either city you can reach Tarifa in about three to four hours by car or bus. BlaBlaCar is quite common in Andalusia and a fun experience.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could also fly into Gibraltar, though keep in mind that you will be entering UK territory. Another fun option is flying into Tangier in Morocco and crossing over to Tarifa by ferry, which takes less than an hour and makes for a great story.

For your onward journey, Tarifa works well as a starting or ending point for a longer Andalusian trip. Seville and Málaga are both worth a few days, and from Málaga you can easily continue along the Costa del Sol or head further into southern Spain. If you are open to crossing into Morocco, Tangier is within reach and popular among travelers looking to extend their adventure.

Some last words...

Tarifa is a great place to experience authentic Spanish life, connect with locals and slow down your pace a little. That said, things look quite different in the summer high season, when kiters and holidaymakers fill the town and the atmosphere picks up considerably.

Whether you are after some nice beach walks, good food and a proper reset for your nervous system, or you want to use it as a base for exploring more of Andalusia, Tarifa works well either way. 😊
