Zicatela & Centro
Zicatela, Puerto Escondido
Pack your flip-flops, or leave them at home altogether. This is barefoot beach life. Surfboards lean against café walls, sunset plans happen on the fly, and nobody seems to be in much of a hurry.
Caféolé, Dan's Café Deluxe, Pepe's Tacos, La Olita, Mercado Zicatela, surf shops, beach bars, and sunset spots are all within walking distance of the house. You'll live in the residential side of Zicatela, close to the action but far enough away that you're not listening to the nightlife when you're trying to sleep.
One thing you'll notice quickly: the waves here are huge. Playa Zicatela is known as the Mexican Pipeline and attracts some of the world's best big-wave surfers. Watching them from the beach is highly recommended. Joining them is recommended only if you really know what you're doing.
You'll find plenty of other surf nomads at La Punta (25 minutes on foot) and the nearby beaches with more beginner-friendly waves.

Centro, Puerto Escondido
Close enough to the action, far enough to still hear the birds. From your front door, it’s a short stroll to beaches, cafés, and taco spots... but also just minutes from the city center’s old-school charm and shops where no one's trying to sell you a dreamcatcher.
You’ve got Playa Bacocho on walking distance for quiet beach walks, free diving, and turtle release moments (yes, it’s as wholesome as it sounds). Playa Carrizalillo is perfect for beginner surf sessions with a side of coconut water. Feeling adventurous? Take a day trip to Chacahua - an Afro-Mexican island community with epic waves and mangrove boat rides that’ll make your phone run out of storage.
Grab your scooter and you’re 15 minutes from La Punta - bars, hip eats, and that familiar “didn’t we meet in Bali?” energy. And when you want to work somewhere new, spots like Pauline Coworking are just around the corner.
Oh - and El Nene, one of the best restaurants in town? That’s just a 10-minute walk. Your future self already has a reservation.
Puerto Escondido, The Town
Tucked away on Oaxaca's Pacific coast, Puerto Escondido combines world-class surf, tropical beaches, and a slower pace of life that's becoming harder to find.
The weather plays a big role in that appeal. Temperatures stay warm year-round, typically ranging between 25°C and 33°C (77°F-91°F), making beach days possible in every season. From May to September, occasional tropical showers bring cooler evenings and larger swells to the coastline. It's the time of year when experienced surfers arrive to challenge the famous waves of Zicatela and when spectators gather to watch some of the world's best big-wave surfers in action.
From October to April, conditions tend to be drier and the ocean more forgiving. It's often considered the best season for beginner and intermediate surfers, with smaller waves at beaches like La Punta and Carrizalillo, while still offering plenty of sunshine and warm water.
Beyond the surf, Puerto offers easy access to lagoons, waterfalls, hot springs, bioluminescent waters, and some of Mexico's most beautiful Pacific beaches. What started as a small fishing town has grown into one of the country's most popular destinations for surfers, remote workers, and creative minds, while still managing to keep much of its original character.
Whether you're here to catch waves, focus on work, improve your Spanish, or simply swap city life for ocean air, Puerto Escondido has a habit of making people stay longer than expected.
