Coliving & Remote Work Glossary
What is a Visa Run?
A visa run is when a traveler temporarily leaves a country to reset or extend their visa eligibility - often by crossing into a neighboring country and returning shortly after. It’s a workaround used in countries with strict tourist visa limits but relatively relaxed reentry policies.
In other words: exit, stamp, return, repeat.
Why Does the Term Matter for Remote Workers or Digital Nomads?
Many digital nomads rely on tourist visas while living and working abroad, especially in countries that don’t yet offer a specific digital nomad visa. Visa runs can be a necessary (but sometimes stressful) part of staying legal while maintaining a location-independent lifestyle.
Understanding the rules - and the risks - is essential for avoiding overstays, fines, or entry bans.
How Does Nomadico Relate to Visa Runs?
Nomadico doesn’t organize visa runs or provide legal visa advice, but we’re aware that many guests use them - especially in regions like Southeast Asia or Central America. In our local WhatsApp groups and community chats, travelers often exchange tips about nearby visa run routes or share recent border experiences.
We always encourage guests to do their own research or speak to a visa expert to stay on the safe side.
Common Misconceptions About Visa Runs
“Everyone does it, so it’s fine.”
Visa rules change frequently, and some countries are cracking down. What worked last year might not today.
“It’s illegal.”
Not necessarily - many countries allow it, but overstaying or abusing the system can lead to consequences.
“You can do unlimited visa runs.”
Some countries impose a limit on how many times you can re-enter within a given period, even with valid stamps.
