Coliving & Remote Work Glossary
What is a Nomad Visa?
A nomad visa (or digital nomad visa) is a type of visa that allows remote workers to legally live and work in a foreign country while being employed by a company or clients outside that country. It’s designed specifically for digital nomads who want to stay longer than a tourist visa normally allows — often 6 to 12 months, with possible extensions.
It's remote work made legal — and more relaxed.
Why Does the Term Matter for Remote Workers or Travelers?
As more people work remotely across borders, legal clarity becomes essential. Nomad visas give remote workers the ability to stay longer, open local bank accounts, or even rent apartments without the stress of visa runs or overstaying a tourist visa. It’s also a great way to integrate more fully into a place and avoid the gray area between tourism and residency.
Nomad visas are becoming a key part of the global shift toward remote lifestyles.
How Does Nomadico Relate to Nomad Visas?
Many of Nomadico’s destinations are in countries that already offer — or are beginning to explore — digital nomad visa programs. That said, it’s still a young and evolving space. Plenty of countries haven’t yet caught on, but that hasn’t stopped nomads from going there. Most of our guests enjoy the lifestyle just fine on a regular tourist visa.
While we don’t handle visa applications, our community managers and local guides often share useful tips or resources to help guests understand their options.
Common Misconceptions About Nomad Visas
“They’re only for EU or U.S. citizens.”
While availability varies, many nomad visas are open to multiple nationalities.
“You have to be a freelancer.”
Not at all — many programs accept full-time remote employees and business owners, as long as income is earned abroad.
“You can’t live the digital nomad lifestyle without one.”
Actually, most digital nomads still use regular tourist visas to travel and work remotely — and it works just fine in many places.
